Having worked on nearly a thousand of Designjet 500 series printers,
I feel like HP is building walls not bridges to make them work.
Upgrading to the latest Windows version builds a wall. Downgrading builds a bridge.
I posted this service note on HPs Designjet forum. However it got deleted and I got banned.
Windows update kill switch regarding Designjet 500, Designjet 510, and Designjet 800 printers.
If your printer is not communicating with your computer, you have received Microsofts Windows 10 update that has a bug in it.
There are several confirmed ways to reconnect.
1. Install a Windows Servicing Stack Update (see comment by Tony below).
2. Uninstall the buggy Windows update.
3. Install the universal HP GL/2 Driver.
To uninstalll it, do the following:
Go to Windows Update, click on "View update history"
Find Windows Update KB4560960 and UNINSTALLED IT.
Reboot the computer.
You may want to try this build:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4567512/windows-10-update-kb4567512
If that fails . . .
1. Install windows update KB4552925.
https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4552925
Reboot the computer. Now you have to load the following . . .
2. Install windows update KB4567523
https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4567523
Reboot the computer.
Alternately, try downloading HPs Designjet Universal GL/2 driver.

Hi Tom,
For my situation (I have the latest Windows 10 build – version 2004, OS Build 19041.331) this fix seems to have worked for me.
June 18, 2020—KB4567523 (OS Build 19041.331) -
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4567523/windows-10-update-kb4567523
First you have to make sure you have the Servicing stack update for Windows 10, version 2004: June 9, 2020 installed
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4560366/servicing-stack-update-for-windows-10-version-2004
Then download the correct package for your version of Windows 10 -

Thanks,
Tony

HP Designjet 500+HPGL-2 card driver has problem with Windows 10 x64.
Windows cannot communicate with the printer after some of the latest updates.
I have tried all available drivers (6.1 / 2006, 8.1 / 2013)
The HPGL-2 card is working properly.
The usb connection is working properly.
Please update the driver.
fix the drivers on June 16 2020 at 03:50PM
I have the same issue. After windows updated to build 2004 my HP design Jet 500 stopped printing. I can’t revert back to a previous build as I had done a windows reset. (due to other windows issues!). I’m using a single port print server over my CAT 6 network. It’s been working well for several years, but has now quit. I tried re-installing the plotter as a local machine and the same thing, not plotting. Hopefully either HP will fix the drivers for the plotter, or Microsoft will fix the issue with an update to windows 10.

I am having the same issue with my DesignJet 500 42 plugged into my network with a CAT6 network cable. My printer has a HP JetDirect 625N network card installed.
I have been printing fine for years from my Windows 10 Pro machine. Now, after the Windows Update 2 days ago, I can’t get it to print. When I try to print a file using Adobe Acrobat DC, I get “The document could not be printed” and then “An error occurred while printing the document”. When I try to print from Adobe InDesign 2020, the program just crashes.
HP DesignJet 500ps42 on June 16 2020 at 03:50PM
After a windows update my computer won’t print to my HP DesignJet 500PS42. When I go to installed printers it no longer show up that way, instead is says “HP Designjet 500PS42+HPGL2 Card”. When i select that one as my printer is says “The document canot be printed” and "an error occurred while printing the document. I have tried updating the driver and it says that it already has the corect driver. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and still nothing. Any clues on what to do?
